Chapter One

From Yorkville to Elm Street

Giacomo · Founder Café 2000, Yorkville Then, Donatello · 1990

In August 1980, Giacomo first opened his dining establishment in Yorkville, Toronto as Café 2000. Ten years later, in 1990, he moved the family to 37 Elm Street — and named it Donatello.

This elegant downtown fine-dining restaurant is a treat for fans of authentic Italian cuisine, served in a welcoming, unhurried atmosphere. On warm summer nights, the action spills onto our front terrace and romantic rooftop patio — the whole neighbourhood smells like garlic and Amarone.

What we serve hasn’t changed much across four and a half decades: fresh pasta rolled the morning of, sauces built from good stock and patience, a wine list that treats the boot as a real place instead of a theme, and a room that trusts couples, families, tourists, solo diners and regulars in more or less equal measure.

Chapter Three

What we’re known for.

Fresh Pasta

Rolled and cut in-house, in the manner of the boot. Simple, exacting, unhurried — the reason Giacomo opened the door in the first place.

The Wine List

A serious pour without a serious attitude. Great wine, great cocktails, hard liquor and beer — bar onsite for a drink before the table is ready.

Rooftop Patio

On warm summer nights, the action spills up to the roof — long dinners under the Toronto sky, the kind of table you don’t want to leave.

Private Dining Room

A room set aside for the birthday, the anniversary, the pre-theatre party — group functions handled quietly, with the same kitchen behind the door.

Vegetarian & Organic

The card always keeps room for vegetarian options and organic dishes — pasta and produce that stand on their own, without apology.

Great Coffee, After.

Dessert, then coffee, then the walk out onto Elm Street. The proper close to an Italian meal — the way a family run place does it.

Reservations Recommended
